HAZARD/
EXPOSURE
ACUTE HAZARDS/
SYMPTOMS
PREVENTION FIRST AID/
FIRE FIGHTING
FIRE Highly flammable. Gives off irritating or toxic fumes (or gases) in a fire.
NO open flames, NO sparks, and NO smoking. NO contact with hot surfaces.
Powder. Carbon dioxide. NO hydrous agents. NO water.
EXPLOSION Vapour/air mixtures are explosive.
Closed system, ventilation, explosion-proof electrical equipment and lighting.
In case of fire: cool drums, etc., by spraying with water but avoid contact of the substance with water.
EXPOSURE

  • INHALATION
  • Corrosive. Burning sensation. Cough. Shortness of breath. Unconsciousness. Symptoms may be delayed (see Notes).
    Closed system and ventilation.
Fresh air, rest. Half-upright position. Refer for medical attention.
  • SKIN
  • Corrosive. Redness. Skin burns. Pain. Blisters.
    Protective clothing.
First rinse with plenty of water, then remove contaminated clothes and rinse again. Refer for medical attention.
  • EYES
  • Corrosive. Redness. Pain. Loss of vision. Severe deep burns.
Face shield or eye protection in combination with breathing protection.
First rinse with plenty of water for several minutes (remove contact lenses if easily possible), then take to a doctor.
  • INGESTION
  • Corrosive. Abdominal cramps. Burning sensation. Diarrhoea. Sore throat. Vomiting.
Do not eat, drink, or smoke during work.
Do NOT induce vomiting. Refer for medical attention.
SPILLAGE DISPOSAL STORAGE PACKAGING & LABELLING
Evacuate danger area! Consult an expert! Collect leaking liquid in sealable, dry, plastic containers. Absorb remaining liquid in dry sand or inert absorbent and remove to safe place. Do NOT let this chemical enter the environment (extra personal protection: complete protective clothing including self-contained breathing apparatus).
Fireproof. Separated from oxidizing substances. Cool. Dry. Well closed.
Airtight. Unbreakable packaging; put breakable packaging into closed unbreakable container.

    PHYSICAL STATE; APPEARANCE:
COLOURLESS LIQUID , WITH PUNGENT ODOUR.

    PHYSICAL DANGERS:
The vapour is heavier than air and may travel along the ground; distant ignition possible.

    CHEMICAL DANGERS:
The substance decomposes on heating producing hydrogen chloride (ICSC 0163). Reacts violently with strong oxidants. Reacts violently with water and moisture producing hydrogen chloride (see ICSC 0163), causing fire and explosion hazard. Attacks metals like aluminium and magnesium.

    OCCUPATIONAL EXPOSURE LIMITS (OELs):
    TLV not established.

    ROUTES OF EXPOSURE:
The substance can be absorbed into the body by inhalation of its vapour.

    INHALATION RISK:
A harmful contamination of the air can be reached very quickly on evaporation of this substance at 20░C.

    EFFECTS OF SHORT-TERM EXPOSURE:
Corrosive. The substance is corrosive to the eyes, the skin and the respiratory tract. Inhalation of this substance may cause lung oedema (see Notes).

EFFECTS OF LONG-TERM OR REPEATED EXPOSURE:
    PHYSICAL
    PROPERTIES
    Boiling point: 66░C
    Melting point: -90░C
    Relative density (water = 1): 1.3
    Solubility in water: reaction
Vapour pressure, kPa at 20░C: 17.9
    Relative vapour density (air = 1): 5.2
    Flash point: 8░C
    Auto-ignition temperature: 404░C
Explosive limits, vol% in air: 5.1-?
    ENVIRONMENTAL
    DATA
This substance may be hazardous to the environment; special attention should be given to water organisms.
    N O T E S
Reacts violently with fire extinguishing agents such as water and foam. The symptoms of lung oedema often do not become manifest until a few hours have passed and they are aggravated by physical effort. Rest and medical observation are therefore essential. Immediate administration of an appropriate spray, by a doctor or a person authorized by him/her, should be considered. Insufficient data are available on the effect of this substance on human health, therefore utmost care must be taken.
